Fishy Business at ERLC ……
ERLC has always been open minded and innovative in it’s efforts to be as self-sustaining as possible, and in October 2015 these efforts were given a huge boost by the commencement of an aquaponics venture.
Generously sponsored by the German Embassy and Taylor’s College, ERLC (with the help of an subject-expert volunteer from The Full Gospel Assembly) headed into this brave new world by purchasing 300 Jade Perch (Scortum barcoo) fries, 30 fish tanks and associated equipment.
Jade perch (fei chui pan in Cantonese) is extraordinarily high in omega-3, more than Atlantic Salmon, and sells for over RM50 per kilogram, making this a potentially lucrative venture.
In an aquaponic system, water from an aquaculture system is fed to a hydroponic system where the by-products are broken down by nitrification bacteria into nitrates and nitrites, which are utilized by the plants as nutrients, and the water is then recirculated back to the aquaculture system.
Initially, ERLC’s plant crops will be beansprouts and long beans.
Students from ERLC are helping in the enterprise, with around 10 students helping at any one time.
The fish are expected to be harvested in around 6 months time, and ERLC plan to sell the fish to MMK / ERLC partner churches and groups.
